Always on the Sunny Side!

Writer's picture: Rachel TaborRachel Tabor

Sunny-Side-Up eggs have always confused me. I mean, isn't this what we all think of when we think of eggs? I see a cartoony image of perfect round white ovals with a yellow-orange middle. But how on earth do you make them? This is the question I was seeking to answer today.

This is the fun and informative video that taught me how!

The process involves putting butter or oil at the bottom of the pan and then using this hot butter to cook the egg yolk in a process called basting.

I did it. I made an egg sunny-side up!!

My first attempt, I tried using steam to cook the egg. The creator of the video actually acknowledges this as an option. All you need to do is crack the egg into the pan, then use a lid over the pan to cook the yolk with steam. This worked, but the result was not nearly as aesthetically pleasing, there was a pale skin over the yolk, and the egg white was overcooked.

My thoughts on eggs sunny-side-up, they're pretty, but not my favorite texture in the world. I think sunny-side-up are to eggs as Red Delicious are to apples. Not the best, but definitely the prettiest!

I love your writing style for this blog, Rachel. Even though I am not big into cooking, your posts are always interesting and entertaining.

I'm a big fan of sunny-side up eggs. When I was a child, my mom always made sunny-side up eggs on Saturday mornings. This blog was fun to read because I saw the inner child in me come to life again.

I'd never realized that cooking an egg over-medium is different than cooking it sunny side up since they look very much the same. Based off your comparison to Red Delicious apples, I don't think I'll be making myself any sunny side up eggs in the future, but it was neat to learn the difference between the two!
